2. My Banjo

My horse Azul — who isn’t technically mine, he belongs to a friend of mine and I get to ride him. We rocked that arena this week. I worked for it, and we had a blast.

In other news: I tackled a cowboy this week. Hadn’t seen him in over a year and he surprised me by showing up at the stables. He’s married to my friend Jo and he’s been working out-of-town.

I have more girl in me than I sometimes admit and took off in a dead run the minute I saw him — Good thing he’s a cowboy or he’d have gotten knocked over.

My friends bring me joy as well.

Last week I was tired from being on the road for so long and was dealing with stolen car issues. (My car was found and returned to me in great condition) This week, it’s about peace, time at the lake and things that matter, like friends and family. This has been a great week you guys!

My hope for you for this weekend and the coming weeks is that you get to spend time with things that fill you up.  I also leave you with a question:

When was the last time you were so happy to see someone you took off at a dead run? Or better yet, when was the last time you allowed yourself to be free enough to do that?

A Dog and a Banjo

73312_10152443694430232_576542692_nI haven’t touched my banjo in two months. Mainly because I’ve been playing my guitar and because I’ve been on the road. Heading back to lessons today — pretty sure my dog can play better than I at this point. Wonder if my teacher will notice?

Music Monday: Rhonda Vincent & The Rage with Bill Gaither

I’ve never heard this song before. It’s kind of a Blue Grass / Gospel mix. with Rhonda Vincent & The Rage and Bill Gaither.

Personal Note: When I was much younger (In my early 30’s) a sweet friend in my 12 step rooms introduced me to the Gaithers.  She would have me watch their videos and listen to their songs and write down everything I learned about the God of my understanding. — I actually had a God that I believed in back then, He was harsh, judgmental, and indifferent. He was absent in the big deals of my life (or so I believed at the time.) I find the Gaithers to be very uplifting, both in their music and in their overall message. Even though I’ve never met them, nor seen them live for that matter, they played (and continue to play) a rather large role in my Spiritual formation. They are coming to Tulsa on July 27 and this time, I plan to be there.

Music Monday: God’s Not Dead, Newsboys

Another contemporary praise and worship song that I enjoy. This one always gets me on my feet. Happy Monday y’all.

24 Years Ago Today

Our Engagement Photo from 1990, Looks straight out of John Hughes Casting, doesn’t it?

I used to be a computer technician in Chicago back in the 80’s. One day I got a trouble ticket for a computer in customer service. Seems some guy had seen me on the floor and spilled coke in his keyboard so that he could meet me. ( I don’t blame him really, I mean I was a babe. 😉 ) I took it downstairs and replaced it with another keyboard with a faulty space bar, because well, I thought he was kinda cute. I tortured that man for two months before agreeing to go out with him. Every week he’d ask me out, every week I’d say no. He finally tells me that he plays bass guitar in a band (yep, he played the guitar card.) and I agreed to ONE date. We went out for pizza and then a comedy club on December 3, 1988. I’ve been his ever since. 24 years later, a move across country, two wonderful boys (now grown men) and I still wouldn’t have it any other way. Love you babe!

Music Monday: Love Me Like A Man

I’m trying something new here for you guys. Now that I’ve been assimilated as a musician (even if it’s still at the wannabe stage)  I’ve been researching different music styles. One of my girlfriends told me she is learning this song by Bonnie Raitt. It’s been so long since I’ve heard it that I had to look it up. And I thought the words to Salty Dog made me blush. I heard this song for the first time when I was only 10 years old and now that I’m old enough to understand the lyrics – oh heck yeah, don’t we all girlfriend. I love Bonnie Raitt (She turned 63 last week). I wish I had a voice for blues.

In Search of my brain

My Brain, My Banjo and Me

It’s all about perspective — I told my son last night that I was going outside to work on sucking less at playing my banjo (aka practice) and he looked at me and said, “Mom you play that thing better than everyone in this house – including Dad and he’s a musician. You don’t have the right to say you suck at something when you are better than all of us. Just sayin.” — Man I love that kid.

I’m a horrible perfectionist. I used to think a perfectionist did everything perfectly or at least near perfect. It took me years to learn that being a perfectionist is a demand rather than an outcome. The self-inflicted demand is more often than not the root of a stink weed of a memory and/or fear of abandonment.

I don’t like doing things I can’t do well and if I can’t do it well enough to suit myself, the old me just didn’t keep trying. I didn’t see the reward in trying again. While riding horses last year, I learned that I’d have great days of riding as well as days of great humility. Some days Cowboy did exactly what I asked and other days he just wanted to jack with me.

Learning the banjo is no different. Some days I nail it, some days my picks trip up the strings and my fingers can’t remember their assigned places. On days like that, I have learned to take a deep breath, relax my shoulders and try again.

For those of you who’ve been around all year you know that my word for the year is “breathe.” Oxygen does wonders for a negative brain.  As simple-minded as it may sound breathing in the good and breathing out the negative works wonders.

I gave up horseback riding so that I can afford banjo lessons. While I miss riding, I do love the banjo. Playing is a different skill set entirely and yet the lessons are the same. Sit tall, be confident, keep it fun and BREATHE.
