The New Zoo in Green Bay Wisconsin

aug 16 213Our family usually takes two summer vacations every year; one just for fun and one focused on family and friends. Our just for fun trips are usually some place close by to Tulsa, like Branson or Oklahoma City and only last about two or three days. Our family trips take us home to Chicago or New York or even Tampa to visit Jeff’s folks an these trips usually last 1 – 2 weeks.

This year, we cut our vacations down to one and visited long time friends in Shawano Wisconsin. Jeff has known Todd and Laura since High School. They were even in our wedding.  Todd and Laura are in their early 40’s and have three year old twins; one boy and one girl. Wow are they busy.

While we were visiting – all of us went to this really cute little Zoo in Green Bay called, The New Zoo. (Click Here for more information) I’m not sure how new it is, but it is just the right size for little ones and had plenty for the bigger kids (my boys ages 16 and 18) to enjoy as well, including feeding the Giraffe’s.

Turns out the animals are all photograph hounds an we were able to bring back some wonderful photos.

We had fun on Todd and Laura’s farm. Hanging out with old friends, boating and fishing on Lake Shawano and just being together as a family. Totally worth the 15 hour car drive.

Did the economy effect anyone else? How did you spend your summer vacation?

Ablaze Church Block Party

kids and waterWell, it’s official – our second annual block party / neighborhood festival was a huge hit in the neighborhood. We had great entertainment and worship from Halo Jordan, Rhema’s Axis Band, Zion’s Fire, as well as Christian Comedians Michele VanDusen and myself.  Yes, I do stand up comedy and no that isn’t anything new, I’ve been making people laugh on accident for years. Now I just do it on purpose. If you don’t believe me just ask my pastor about the time I informed him in Sunday school that I hated the Rachel in the OT (Jacob’s Wife).I thought the fact that God gave Christ through Leah shows that God does indeed have taste and that he gave men beautiful women for no other reason than to make complete fools out of them.

Yeah, that went well. I have the ability to make my husband hide under tables and my pastor to hang his head and blush. What can I say, it’s a gift. Being part of CCA is a huge honor and privledge. It is an opportunity to share the gospel through humor and Grace and make people laugh in the process. I could not be more humbled by getting to be a part of it.

Jennifer Weiser did a great job coordinating everything and the only sad part of the day was she had two performers pull no shows. She did however have a lot of help the day of and big thanks go out to everyone who participated in making the day enjoyable for the community.

Food Drive For Broken Arrow Neighbors (Ablaze Church)

I’m a day late with my post and I know it. I just wanted to tell everyone that this Saturday, Ablaze Church will be hosting a food drive and fall festival for Broken Arrow Neighbors. Please join us at Liberty Elementary Saturday afternoon for great music, comedy, and a wonderful gospel message.

Social Networking (But that’s NOT what I meant!)

home alone pic

Imagine if you will, posting a humor piece that is poorly received. So poorly received in fact that one woman actually posts something along the lines of calling you “an overstuffed pig who plays with puppets and can’t keep a day job.” How eager will you be in responding? Will you be nice enough to say “Give me three days to think about my response and I’ll get back to you?”

My head line should read “Smart man meets stupid redhead with a hot temper and behaves much better than she does.” I’ll be lucky if I hear from him in the next century much less in three days.

For better or for worse, the world wide web makes everything more readily accessible than ever before. That applies to great things, and not so great things. The web makes it easy for all of us to sit behind a screen and communicate things to a computer forgetting we’re talking to a person.

Every day I read words that I know the person would not use face to face. Some days I respond with words I’d never use in person. Some days I’m brutally harsh. The downside with writing, is tone cannot be conveyed. It takes a very talented writer to properly convey humor. And it takes self restraint to not ask the person where their head was when they wrote that story when the humor fails to be conveyed. While my self restraint is improving, I still have a lot of work to do. As is the case with a very talented comic whom I called a stuffed pig yesterday. He wrote (what I hope) is a humor piece only I didn’t get it.

I didn’t see the humor. I saw (read) a very degrading post against women – and it lit a fire in me that ensured 1 – he’ll never hire me to open for him and 2. I was not so sure I wanted to ever buy tickets to his show anymore. I should have sat on my “instinct” and said nothing. Really.

I allowed my emotions to rule my actions – I’m usually better than that.  I should have read it, remembered the guidelines for commenting (keep your comments productive or move on) and either moved on or simply stated “Wow, I don’t get this, would you please expound?”  Turns out it was a humor piece – but not having a personal relationship with said comic – I did not know that. I should not have called him anything.  That not the way to communicate “I don’t understand this.” Chances are, he’ll never speak to me again – and I deserve that.

In today’s world we can blog, twitter, digg, and stumble our way to fame (for better and for worse) and mediocrity in a heart beat. There is no such thing as a “private” email, e-zine, or blog post. We forget that as writers. Sometimes, self indulgent creatures that we are, we forget that while *I* know what I meant by this or that post, my reader may not. I need to choose my words carefully.

There are wonderful writers out there – and I do not pretend to be one of them. There are great blogs to read and to learn from – most of them are on my blog roll.

My whole point here is I forgot I was responding to a person – and that is never cool

Blogs and social networking are about relationships and two way communication. And with the “safety” of a computer screen, we sometimes write blogs we’d never speak out loud and sometimes we comment or email responses using words we’d (hopefully) never say otherwise.

Has that ever happened to you?

Confession’s of a Pastor’s Wife (Kathryn Bonner)

Interview with Kathryn Bonner

(Please note that one lucky person will win a free copy of “Confessions of a Pastor’s Wife” at the end of this month. Please leave a comment if you would like your name entered into the drawing. )

Kathryn, when and how did you first get the inspiration to write “Confessions Of A Pastor’s Wife”?

I write about this in the intro of the book. It was literally like a burning bush moment for me. In 2004 God gave me all of the chapter titles all at once. He was literally speaking this book into me!  I never expected it!  It’s one of the reasons the subtitle is “He Speaks, Can You Hear Him?” I literally ran into my office and grabbed my prayer journal and began writing all of the chapter titles down as fast as He was delivering them to me. They came in perfect speed – it was overwhelming and awesome!  I stood there in amazement staring at each chapter title – knowing what would be in every single chapter!  Of course, immediately thereafter began to have all of the feelings of being unable, unworthy, and unqualified to do this work. But it was God who gave it to me and He who made the way for it to be completed.

What was the  process of writing this book work? Was this an all-at-once kind of epiphany or did this take years in the making, collecting thoughts and ultimately putting them together?

I mentioned before how God gave me the book to write in 2004, but it wasn’t until 2006 that I really began to write it. He had to build my faith further, nudging me along. One of the ways in which He continued the prompting was that He provided me with a life coach to hold me accountable, to push me. Then once I finally surrendered all of the self-doubt, unworthiness and fears I began standing it this beautiful place of faith, with His power. He gave me a joy around it and then I began to write. It was like opening up a vein, it just began to flow. There were times when I couldn’t pull myself away from the writing, that’s when the writing is great!  That’s when you feel the power of God, the Holy Spirit moving through you, Him speaking. That’s the gift He gives me in it. I am so thankful for this gift. It’s all from Him, all of it. I love it.

One of the chapters in your book that is titled “Discovering God” you say that there are “moments when God speaks to you through your dreams” does God still speak to you in your dreams?

Oh yes, He sure does, and I hope He never stops!  He also speaks to my husband in dreams. Dreams seem to be one of the ways He has revealed major transactions that are headed our way.  He speaks profoundly to me through the dreams. It’s not every day, but when it happens it’s intense.  In the book I write about some of the dreams He has given me that have come to pass. He’s also done so with Bruce.

You talk about the many ways in which God speaks to us, do you hear His voice as an audible voice or is it an inner sensing voice?  Also can you share a few ways in which God speaks and reveals Himself to us, while backing this up through Scripture?

I don’t hear Him in an audible voice, it’s an inner voice that I hear Him, and I hear Him through His Word. Some Biblical references in which God speaks to us are:  Exodus 3:14: God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” ACTS 9:15: “But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.’” 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The book frequently takes a humorous approach; I found the chapter titled “The Bug Truck to be deep and absolutely hilarious all at the same time. It has a kind of an intimate “ya ya sisters” kind of thing? Do you think of your book as something that will appeal more to women than to men? Why or why not?

Women love it, and they laugh as they fly through the pages and then they cry as they land on the very next sentence. It’s been very soul stirring. You know, at first I thought that it would have an appeal mainly to women; however, I am getting incredible feedback and actual responses from men. Men are really able to relate to this book on numerous levels. They have shared how parts of it have essentially moved them emotionally as well. This book is about marriage, talks about becoming a blended family, and talks a lot about Bruce and his approach to our marriage, speaks to raising our children, financial concerns, and being a supportive partnership in marriage. So it has been speaking volumes to men, which I am glad to hear… God is good.

How did your husband Bruce support your efforts with the book?

Bruce was totally supportive. He was an encourager to me. He prayed for me, he knew that this was something new for me and he enjoyed the process along with me. I think he was rather fascinated with the way that God had spoken this book into me.

Was he at all curious of just how much “confessing” appears in the book?

I’m sure he was a bit, but interestingly enough he wasn’t asking to read it, he wasn’t asking me what I was writing. I found that interesting, because if it were him writing a book, I know that my curiosity would get to me, I’d want to read each page as it was written. He didn’t do that at all. He just watched me as I wrote, sat back and smiled at it all.

What do you think is the essence of what you felt compelled to say?

Oh wow, that feels like a loaded question! There are so many things regarding faith, family, how God moves and so much more. I think the two main things that I want people to recognize is how God uses each of us, and the other thing would be the most beautiful and profound ways He speaks to us. He uses you to speak into my life, into my heart, to hear Him. This book is a portion of my life story, (not all of it certainly and there are more books to come). In this non-fiction faith story, you will find pieces of your very own faith story as you turn the pages, you will hear the quiet whispers being spoken lovingly straight into your very own ears. God has a way of speaking; He has a desire to be heard, and to be trusted by us. He has such wonderful and glorious things to reveal to us, not only through His powerful Word, but also through all of His people. I am compelled by God to share the ways in which HE SPEAKS to us, all of the many and wondrous ways… through Dreams, through Wise Counsel, through the Stillness of Meditation Alone in our Closets, through The Whisper of the Wind, through a Bumper Sticker, through Children, through the Clouds, and in so many other ways!  None of them are farfetched at all!  I want it to be known how the Holy Spirit works, in the holy and mysterious ways. He wants us to hear Him so He uses the multifaceted ways to grab us, ways that He knows we will hear. The Bible reveals to all of us many of the ways He speaks. Through Clouds, through Donkeys, through Burning bushes and the list goes on and on. Our lives are a walk of faith, struggle, joy, and more struggles and more faith, but we are never alone, never without El Roi – Our God who sees us.

How has the book been received so far by those who have read it?

It’s been really cool for me. My sister called after she read it and said “Wow, I’m so surprised, pleasantly surprised!”  She didn’t realize the writing ability that I had; I laughed and said that I had no idea either. My mom and dad love it, and of course they would. My mother-in-law raves about it and says I should be on Oprah, which makes me laugh. Bruce loves it, of course. My kids adore it; my sons-in-law enjoy it and are proud of me, Of course each of my family members would respond that way. What has been wonderful to see though is all the reader responses on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble, all give it 5 Star ratings, even men have made comments on it. The other blessings are the emails and calls and notes that I have received telling me how the book has moved them, how it’s spoken to them, increased their faith walk, made sense in areas of their lives where they needed that exact Word from God. Others, tell me that there are so many places that they can relate, and still others tell me that they feel like they know me better, and understand the way that God Speaks because of it. This is the essence of the book, and speaks directly to the subtitle “HE SPEAKS CAN YOU HEAR HIM?”

What, in your opinion, will readers find most surprising about the life of a pastor’s wife?

That we are just as human as they are, we make mistakes. I will make more mistakes, certainly not intentionally, just because I am human. I am very honest and candid in sharing my truth, my life, and my confessions of when and how I have messed up, done things the wrong way and what I’ve learned from it. I think that they can have certain expectations of who we are as a “Pastor’s Wife” or who we should be, that in reality we just aren’t. And yet, they may also find that to be refreshing. I am a leader among women, and enjoy that role, and I am a woman who loves the Lord with every inch of myself and want so badly for the world to love Him as much as I do. I hope that they find me to be normal, very real, and see that I am trying to walk out my faith the best I can. They may be surprised to note that in my daily living I am a bit ditsy, (OK, maybe that won’t really be surprising! 🙂

What are your plans for the future in the publishing world? Think you have any more books in you?

Oh yes, there are at least four more to come. I have also written a Bible Study Companion to this book, it’s in the first stages of completion. I have written a guided Biblical Meditation titled “In The Potters Hand” which is derived from Jeremiah 18:1-5, and it is beautiful, and profound and straight from God. It can be found on www.AwakeningsLifeCoaching.com. I am also in the beginning stages of the second book now. This is truly a calling the Lord has placed right in the middle of my heart.

What else does God have you doing these days Kathryn, and how can our readers connect with you?

I am in the process of writing more books, and just finished the Bible Study Companion to this book. I am a Life Purpose Coach, and I do two day 1-1 individual retreats facilitating Life Plans for women, the part I love is which is an amazing thing to witness, is when a women discovers her purpose and passion. My husband also does Life Plans for men. We do couples’ Life Plans as well. I am an instructor through LPCCI for those who are interested in becoming a Life Coach. I am an international speaker and enjoy traveling to the various parts of the world encouraging and sharing the wonders of God!  My websites are www.AwakeningsLifeCoaching.com (based on Isaiah 50:5 “He awakens me morning by morning…) and http://www.KathrynBonner.com   I am putting together Writers Retreat in September for Christian Women. They can register for this retreat and find out more about this opportunity by going to my website www.WomenOfPassionatePurpose.com.

Free In Christ at Ablaze Church

I had a different post here this morning, and word press ate it when I hit the publish button. I was angry at first, and then I realized, maybe my original post was crap. Maybe I needed to re-write it. That happens, even to me.

Some times I choose the safe route to protect my heart. After all what kind of mother admits to  wanting their 16 year old son to meet a convicted drug dealer and murderer and hopes his listens to him, because he won’t listen to her any more.  My first post was safe – just a nice report on a guest speaker. I’m not sure why, but right now – I feel the need to be real with you, rather than safe. Just because we are leaders in our church, it does not mean we lead perfect lives. Our lives are messy too, just like everyone elses.

Tony McMullen of Free In Christ Ministries, came to speak at our mission start, Ablaze Church, in Broken Arrow on Saturday night. Tony is an ex-con.

I’ve met Tony before at Our Savior several years ago. He is a former drug user/dealer and a murderer. Tony is also the first man I’ve seen my 16 year seem intimidated by in a long time. Tony’s message and testimony struck a chord in my son. A chord that needed to be hit. Tony spoke to his heart in a way that a mother cannot. Tony has met the devil face to face – in very real ways. Sometimes only a man who hasmet the devil can speak to a boy who wants to dance with him.

Tony’s testimony struck a chord in all of us – don’t  give the devil a foothold, and nothing absolutely nothing is beyond the redemptive will of God – and nothing can seperate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.

That is a great message for anyone, no matter where you are on your Christian walk. It’s hopefilled and redemptive.

————————

Tony grew up in North Tulsa. He came from a church going family and a strict father. He was taught about Christ, but believed a lie. You know the one – that nagging thought that it’s true for you, but not for me. I’m different. God left something out of me. I can’t be redeemed, I’m too bad, too horrible, too low for Christ. Tony lived most of his life believing those lies and running away from God. He didn’t run out of hatred for God, but out of fear.

A man – feared by many in the community and in the prisons of Oklahoma is also a man who was filled with fear himself.

If you believe that God does not listen to the prayers of a sinful man, than you are mistaken. He answers my prayers, and he answer’s yours. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. That includes you, and that includes me.

God even answers the prayers of a convicted drug dealer and murderer. God speaks behind the prison walls – whether they be of steal and concrete – or less obvious walls that we build ourselves.

God speaks on death row to the hearts of thousands every year.

Paul was in prison because of his faith.

Tony was in prison because of his choices.

“Own your choices, don’t let others make them for you. The wrong things might look good at first, but then Satan never shows you the consequences.” – Tony McMullen

Tony and his wife Candy travel all over the United States sharing their story of hope and redemption. If you would like more information about their ministry and their story see, Free In Christ Ministries.

Ablaze Church Updates July 20, 2009

zions fire block party june 2009I know it has been a while since I’ve posted any updates on our mission start being sponsored by the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. It is not that we haven’t been doing anything, it’s that we’ve been doing so much that I have not been able to post.

I love the looks I get when I tell people that the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is trying to plant 2,000 new churches. They always seem astonished at first and then genuinly interested. Yes, LUTHERANS planting churches, is that cool or what?

Our team has really jelled into a bit of a working rhythm. We have a couple who have dedicated themselves to our youth, taking them places, teaching Bible Study and just being there for them. They have become wonderful hands and feet to these kids. They are truly Christ with skin on. Because of the generosity of our home congregation, I am happy to report that we are able to send 10 kids to Camp Lutherhoma this summer. None of these children have ever been to church camp before, and this has been an exciting adventure. Erick and Jen also picked these kids up and drove them to Vacation Bible School this summer at Our Savior.

Our Web Page is finally up and operational thanks to our drummer and technical guru. You can check it out to see what all we are up to.

We have wonderful events coming up in August. Tony Mac, convicted drug dealer and murderer turned Christian and Evangelist will be visiting and sharing his testimony with us on August 1. You don’t want to miss that.

On August 5, our families are invited out to Cactus Bar Ranch for a time of fellowship and horsemanship.

August 15 we are having our second annual Stokin up the Community festival with live music, inflatables, facepainting and even some comedy via yours truly and my friend Michele Van Dusen. It is going to be an awesome afternoon of fun, fellowship and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our numbers are growing strong and we can always use prayer – for the families that come and for those God is still calling. We have outgrown our present facility and are in great need of a permanent home. I know that God has a place in mind for us, so please pray that it becomes available soon and we are able to move in.

Thank you for checking in on us. Until next week.

Mission Monday – A New Thing for Redemption’s Heart

Having a blog or a web page that brings value to readers, isn’t as easy as one would think.  Blogging is about community. With the advent of the Internet, our world is expanding and so are our communities. Thanks to some wonderful new friends who are sharing with me their ups and downs, and their media successes and mistakes,I hope I’m moving in the right direction.

You dear readers are the reason I am here. This whole blog originated with the purpose of keeping our out of state friends up to date on the happenings of Ablaze Church (LCMS) as well as life in general. My readership has grown and I need to be a better steward of your time.  Over the next few months I will be implimenting changes that will make things easier for all of you to find what you are looking for. The first major change I have made is in my editorial calender.

  1. Mission Mondays – Every Monday I will be posting updates on Ablaze Church as well as Our Savior news.
  2. Traveling Tuesdays – Today’s family is on the go. At least ours is. I will be exploring different and fun places to be in and around the Tulsa/Broken Arrow Communities.
  3. Wordless Wednesdays – Photos and art that strike me.
  4. Thoughtful Thursdays – Here you will find Book and Bible Study reviews, guest bloggers, and pieces of my own personal story.
  5. Fun and Fit Fridays – I’ve added something new to my life – as a caretaker I have learned – mostly the hard way – that taking care of others without taking care of myself, leaves me tired, negative, and overwhelmed. The fact that I am also in full blown menopause also helped push my need to change up how I do things.  Fridays will be the day I post new ways to have fun and eat well while taking care of ourselves.

I hope you like the changes.

Stay tuned to today’s post on Ablaze later this afternoon.

Blessings

Deana
